Paolo Pellegrin Ethnic Albanian refugees, fleeing Kosovo, arrive at Morinë, Albania. 1999
"This image represents a suite of turning points, both in terms of the geopolitical and humanitarian implications - and p
(...) ersonally as a photographer.
The Kosovo War was one of the last acts of the breakup of Yugoslavia, and I spent two years covering the conflict and its aftermath. At the time I made this image in 1999, hundreds of thousands of people were being forced to flee their homes into neighboring Albania. It was the first time I had witnessed and documented such an intense humanitarian crisis and its consequences.
This experience would shape both my visual approach as a photographer and my trajectory documenting urgent issues of our time."
