The Magnum Photos x PHOTO 2020 Student Intensive is a five-day educational program developed by Magnum Photos and PHOTO 2020, International Festival of Photography to encourage professional advancement among students and early-career photographers. PHOTO is a major new international festival of photography that will activate Melbourne and sites across Regional Victoria with the most inspiring photography from Australia and around the world.
Given the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, coupled with the advice of government departments and health authorities, the decision was made to postpone the inaugural PHOTO 2020 International Festival of Photography until 10 – 27 September 2020. As such the programme outlined below, which was originally intended for April, may be subject to change.
This first iteration of this program will include a professional practice Seminar, Portfolio Reviews and an exclusive three-day workshop run by Magnum’s international photographers and network of industry experts.
Magnum Photos and PHOTO 2020 are providing Australian photographers an opportunity to undertake this Student Intensive. Additional places will be available to the Seminar and Portfolio Reviews. See below for details.
Subject to change, The Student Intensive will be comprise of three events:
The professional practice seminar is a one-day event for students and early-career photographers. The Seminar will help to demystify many aspects of the international photographic industry and offer practical advice on how to be a successful and socially engaged photographer today.
The Portfolio Reviews provide a significant opportunity for artists and photographers to present their work to leading professionals in the field of photography for feedback and guidance. Find more information on this event here.
This workshop will be led by industry professionals Shannon Ghannam, Global Education Director at Magnum Photos; Jacqueline Bates, Photography Director at The California Sunday Magazine; and Patrick Waterhouse, Artist and former Editor-in-Chief of Colors Magazine.
Over three days participants will work intensely amongst the tutors and peers to produce a zine of students’ work to also be showcased on the Magnum Photos website. This publication will capture conversations from the event, the challenges of working as a photographer today and advice on how to navigate these issues for use by the wider photographic community. Participants will also have access to Martin Parr and Cristina de Middel and their process working on the Magnum Live Lab.
Participants should come fully equipped with a camera and laptop with editing software.
Eligibility for Photographers
Creative Victoria are subsidising ten Victorians to take part in the Magnum Photos x PHOTO 2020 Student Intensive. Five places have been awarded to the Photographers presenting their work at PHOTO 2020 New Photographers #1 at SEVENTH Gallery in Melbourne and five positions will be awarded through an Open Call.
An additional two places are being supported by University of Technology, Sydney and one place by the Curtin University, Perth. Photographers will be awarded a position through their respective University.
Open Call Eligibility
• Victorian residents who are currently enrolled in or have graduated from a tertiary institution in the past 12 months
• Be available for the full dates of the program, (to be announced).
• Have completed or are developing a personal body of work with a broadly documentary or conceptual approach.

• Confirmation of enrolment in a Victorian tertiary institution or graduation from a Victorian tertiary institution in the past 12 months
• Professional Development (max 1 page): Why do you wish to participate in the program, what do you hope to take away from the experience and how might this opportunity benefit your career as a photographer?
• Project Statement (max 500 words): What is your completed or current body of work about?
• CV (max 1 page)
• A maximum of 20 images presented as PDF
