A German U-boat strike against the Brazilian ship, the Paraná, provoked anti-German riots in April 1917, with Brazil declaring war on Germany in October 1917 after three more Brazilian ships had been sunk. The Brazilian army sent a small unit to France while ships belonging to the Brazilian navy arrived to join the British fleet at Gibraltar on 10th November 1918, the day before the war ended.
