Carl De Keyzer Former Gulag camp turned into a prison. From the project, ‘Zona.’ Krasnoyarsk, Siberia, Russia. 2000.
“Camp #27 is one of the former Gulag camps dating from the 30s, part of the Kraslag prison cam
(...) p system (camps around Krasnoyarsk, Siberia). It is seen as a ‘model’ camp. Access by visitors, journalists and foreign politicians is relatively easy.
Still, you can imagine my surprise when I heard that most of the dreadful Gulag camps in Russia are now ordinary prisons filled with inmates. For my book ZONA I managed, with the help of local friends, to visit almost 50 different camps between 2000 and 2003. Most of these were not so ‘model’ like.”
