“Konya, Turkey is the western frontier of my land, the one I feel truly Asian in. It is a crescent of land
(...) which crosses Iran, Afghanistan and Central Asia to end in Xinjiang, China.
Everywhere the earth is the color of dust, veined with streams and made verdant with poplars; the air is intense and the climate extreme. When I discovered Kashgar, I knew I had reached the eastern frontier of my land. I was still home.”
