New York: Photographing the City 236

The city of New York has been central to the story of Magnum and its collective of photographers since the agency’s founding in 1947. As the legend goes, the agency was founded over a magnum of champagne at the Museum of Modern Art, taking its name from that particularly generous sized bottle. The New York bureau was opened in the same year, and the city has remained a home to Magnum and its photographers to this day.
