We aim to provide prints of the highest standard that maintain their beauty and value for years to come. The accompanying text labels as well as all supporting materials are archival, meaning that they are acid-free and will not damage the print or affect its longevity. The usual precautions should be taken to retain a photograph’s depth of tone and contrast, and we recommend that a photograph should not be hung in direct, continuous sunlight. This print is for personal usage only, intended for display in the home or other private spaces. For all other uses, such as display in public spaces or institutions, publishing the image online or in print, or any other form of usage, permission must be granted by Magnum Photos. Weegee (1899-1968), born Usher Fellig in what is now Zolochiv, Ukraine, first worked as a self-taught photographer at age 14, three years after his family immigrated to the United States. His nickname of “Weegee” is said to refer to the phonetic “Ouija,” because of his magical knowledge and instant arrivals at crimes and other emergencies. As a freelance photographer in the 1930s, at a time when New York City had at least eight daily newspapers and when wire services were just beginning, Weegee captured and distributed images of spot news events faster than almost anyone else. He frequently worked at night, setting out from his apartment on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, across from police headquarters, when breaking news came across his police radio. For one intense decade, between 1935 and 1946, Weegee was perhaps the most relentlessly inventive figure in American photography. In the 1940s, increased visibility boosted Weegee’s growing reputation, and he began stamping his prints “Weegee the Famous.” The International Center of Photography’s comprehensive Weegee archive includes more than 20,000 prints. The Weegee archive was bequeathed to ICP in 1993 by Wilma Wilcox, Weegee’s long-term partner.
About Magnum Photos
Magnum Photos was founded in Paris in 1947 as an artists’ cooperative by four pioneering photographers, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa, David “Chim” Seymour and George Rodger. The legendary photo agency continues to shape photographic practice and maintains its original values of uncompromising excellence, truth, respect and independence, representing an idiosyncratic mix of journalist, artist and storyteller. Magnum photographers share a vision to chronicle world events, people, places and culture with a powerful narrative that defies convention, shatters the status quo, redefines history and transforms lives.
About The International Center of Photography
The International Center of Photography is the world’s leading institution dedicated to photography and visual culture. Cornell Capa founded ICP in 1974 to champion “concerned photography”—socially and politically minded images that can educate and change the world. Through our exhibitions, education programs, community outreach, and public programs, ICP offers an open forum for dialogue about the power of the image.
