Announcement: The Graduate Photographers Award 2017 Nominees
The shortlisted nominees of the Graduate Photographers Award
Magnum Photos is proud to present The Graduate Photographers Award 2017 in association with Photo London and RBB Economics. This photographic award, aimed at recent UK graduates, acknowledges the best emerging photographers while exposing them to both a public and highly professional audience. Our panel of nominators have each put forward ten outstanding photographers who have graduated from a UK degree course relating to photography or lens-based media in the last three years.
This year’s panel was comprised of Maxwell Anderson – photographer and director of Bemojake books, Tristan Lund– art consultant and curator, Natasha Caruana – photographer and Senior Lecturer of Photography at the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham, UK, Michael Segalov – News Editor at Huck Magazine and Sabina Jaskot-Gill – Associate Curator of Photographs, National Portrait Gallery.

From these nominations, a selection of ten photographers will be identified by a jury and announced in an exclusive event at the fair. Finalists win mentoring from a Magnum photographer, a portfolio review event with the nomination panel and a slideshow of their work at the prize-giving reception at Photo London.
The Graduate Photographers Award builds on the collective commitment from Magnum Photos, Photo London and RBB Economics in the support, development and advancement of early career photographers.

Nominator panel
Maxwell Anderson:
Maxwell Anderson is a photographer and director of Bemojake books, an independent photobook publisher established in 2011. Maxwell started his career in publishing as Chris Boot’s assistant at Chris Boot Ltd. He went on to manage the company when Boot became the Executive Director of the Aperture Foundation in New York. During this time Maxwell published his first self-published book, See You Soon and established Bemojake, publishing their first book, Celebrity by Kenji Hirasawa, in 2011. In 2012 Maxwell project-managed and produced Aperture’s 60th anniversary project, Aperture Remix, which involved creating 9 limited edition artist’s books and culminated in an exhibition. Bemojake has published 13 titles to date, with 3 titles due for 2017 including the Bar Tur Photobook Award winner.
Tristan Lund:
Tristan Lund is an art consultant and dealer working in London. He is collection curator of The Incite Project, a UK based collection of photojournalism and documentary photography and he represents a select group of emerging photographic artists including the 2015 Magnum nominee Max Pinckers. For the 2017 edition of Photo London Tristan is curator of the Discovery section dedicated to young galleries.
He is a trusted advisor to private collectors of photography internationally, sourcing works from artists, galleries and auction houses and navigating the art market on their behalf, both in buying and selling. With experience in the field of vintage photography he is a member of the Frieze Masters vetting committee and as the Director of Michael Hoppen Contemporary from 2010-2014 he is in a position to advise and support emerging and established photographic artists.
Natasha Caruana
Natasha Caruana is a photographic artist living and working in London. She has an MA in Photography from the Royal College of Art, London and is a Senior Lecturer of Photography at the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham, UK. Caruana’s art practice is grounded in research concerned with narratives of love, betrayal and fantasy. Significant to all Caruana’s work is the questioning of how today’s technology is impacting relationships. The newly commissioned, Divorce Index, will open at FACT Gallery, Liverpool, in 2017. The piece is a culmination of the work made during her residency at the Open Data Institute, as part of the Data as Culture Programme 2015/16.
Michael Segalov
Michael Segalov is the News Editor at Huck Magazine, and a freelance journalist and producer. At Huck Michael oversees commissioning and editing original stories for the magazine’s website on a daily basis.
As a freelance writer, Michael contributes regularly to publications including VICE, The Guardian, The i, The Independent and others, and appears regularly on national broadcast media as a commentator too.
Sabina Jaskot-Gill:
Sabina Jaskot-Gill (MA (Hons) in History of Art and English Literature, University of Edinburgh) joined the National Portrait Gallery in April 2016 as Associate Curator of Photographs. Recent displays at the Gallery include David Gwinnutt: Before We Were Men and Double Take: Akram Zaatari and the Arab Image Foundation. Previously she lectured in the history and theory of photography at Sotheby’s Institute of Art, London. She is the recipient of an AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Award jointly supervised by the University of Essex and Tate, researching Polish post-war photography.
