Last year, 1854 Media, publisher of British Journal of Photography and Magnum put a worldwide call out for photographers to submit work that proves that there is more that unites us, than sets us apart. Founded on the concept of individuality, community and unity, British Journal of Photography and Magnum Photos invited photographers of any level, to show us the world through their eyes, to capture the many faces of humanity, and to document the universal expressions of life; laughter, courage, moments of reflection, journeys to work, first hellos, last goodbyes, and everything in between. Magnum photographers Alessandra Sanguinetti, Jacob Aue Sobol, and Newsha Tavakolian formed part of the judging panel.

In total, we had entries from 108 different countries and in a wide variety of languages, reflecting how the award brought people together from all over the world. Approximately 28,000 images were entered, and the countries with the most entries were the UK, USA, Italy, China, Australia, Germany, France, Canada, Brazil and Spain.

The winning and shortlisted photographers were announced earlier this year, along with a publication of a book featuring the 200 shortlisted images. The slideshow above showcases a selection of the winning and shortlisted images, and is a reflection of the truly global entries.
