Rage, Disbelief, Love & Peace
Signs and slogans that have been taken to the streets in resistance, from civil rights movement marches to today’s spontaneous anti-ban protests

They say actions speak louder than words; a mantra that swells the streets with a physical manifestation of people’s resistance. But the homemade signs people carry with them on protests capture nuances of feeling amongst the crowd. Heartfelt, ironic, humorous, or straight talking, the sentiments they carry range from rage, disbelief, to love and peace. Magnum photographers have borne witness to some of the most important political protests in living memory, from the civil rights marches of the 1960s, to the ongoing Dakota Access Pipeline protests and anti-Trump activity of late, as well as numerous anti-war marches over the decades. Here, we present a gallery of images that focus on the signs people use to protest with, from anti-segregation in the 1960s to the anti immigration-ban protests of 2017.
