On September 4th 2016, Pope Francis canonized Mother Teresa in Rome. Speaking in St. Peter’s Square, the Pope said, “Let us carry her smile in our hearts and give it to those whom we meet along our journey, especially those who suffer.” The ceremony was captured by Magnum’s Raghu Rai, who photographed Mother Teresa at work in 1979, as well as her state funeral in 1997. Ahead of the iconic missionary’s sainthood, Rai captured images of Missionaries in Kolkata before making the journey, like so many others, to Rome. Here he photographed the Pope, as well as the pilgrims and tourists who witnessed this historic moment.
