On June 28, 2017, it was announced that charges would be brought against six people for their roles in the Hillsborough football stadium disaster of 1989, and its aftermath. Here, we look back at Peter Marlow‘s poignant images of fans at Liverpool’s Anfield ground paying their respects, laying flowers and leaving Liverpool scarves on the terraces.

During the FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest at Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough football ground on April 15, 1989, a human crush in the Liverpool supporters’ stands before kick-off resulted in the deaths of 96 people. What followed was an alleged police cover-up, and decades of campaigning by the families of victims and survivors for those responsible to be brought to justice.

The first coroner’s inquest into the Hillsborough disaster, completed in 1991, ruled all deaths that day to be accidental. Families continued to campaign and in 2009 an independent panel was set up to review all of the evidence. A second inquest in 2016 ruled that the 96 victims were unlawfully killed due to grossly negligent failures by police and ambulance services to fulfil their duty of care to the supporters. On June 28, 2017, six people were charged with various offences including manslaughter by gross negligence, misconduct in public office and perverting the course of justice for their actions during and after the disaster.
