“Par delà la réalité” (Beyond reality), Athens, Greece 1937

“‘To each his own reality,” a phrase List was fond of using, shows what was at stake for him. It is a free translation of the title of Pirandello’s comedy Ciascuno a suo modo (1925). By blurring the distinctions between stage and audience, actor and character, in his theatre within the theatre, Pirandello sought to strip away man’s facial masks and the playacting in his behaviour, and to reveal the underlying truth. List, operating with optical paradoxes, follows his example. His quarry photographs, taken at Lycabettus of Athens, have something of antique open air theatre about them. Reminiscent of Cocteau’s films in their use of mirrors, they enact images and apparitions in broad daylight. These pictures vex our understanding by setting up various forms of interplay, between statue and living figure, antiquity or present, as also between male and female — the cloth-draped figures looking like women are in fact youths. Draperies, which appear as if tenanted by human forms, constitute an in between stage.” – Günter Metken, Fotografie Metafisica
