Italian film actress Sophie Loren, photographed at home in Rome by David ‘Chim’ Seymour, in 1955. Chim’s career spanned genres and styles. His humanistic approach, which yielded important work documenting conflicts and their aftermath, was complementary to his low key and personable personality, which quickly led him to become the favored photographer of many celebrities. Chim remembers this shoot: “I photographed Sophia in 1955, a budding actress, we talked over the phone and I explained what I wanted. She invited me over for a Sunday morning early meeting, I found her in bed in a dark blue negligee although she was talking on the phone. She got up and changed costume, we went to a covered balcony of her apartment and I had nothing else to do but record a stream of poses which somehow met my memory of wartime pin-ups. All this was done with a touch of irony and maliciousness.”
Giclée print, 16×20”, stamped w. Uneditioned.
Reproducing the original without alteration and enlarged to a 16″x20″ paper size, these Magnum Contacts offer a unique insight into the methods by which our photographers produced some of their best known images, by clearly showing the sequence of frames and the marks of the editing process on each sheet.
