The steelworks of Winterthur, Switzerland, 1943. Accompanying the images at the time, and reflecting on the iconic imagery of man and machine creaed by Werner Bischof, Swiss writer and journalist Arnold Kübler writes, “We are deeply affected, whether we are involved or not. We live in these times and in this world and must adapt ourselves as the world in turn changes us, must commit freely or under coercion to these transformations and reconfigurations in order to remain alive and empowered. The war bares the true countenance of the technical age in all its harshness and cruelty. It was the technical age that created the fourth class, the industrial workers, as well as that economic order called capitalism. For a century the world has struggled under a restructuring of social life made necessary by the age of the machine” – The Editorial, May 1943
