2018 at Magnum Photos

2018 has been a significant year for both individual Magnum photographers and the collective: Susan Meiselas’ blockbuster retrospective exhibition Mediations toured several locations, including Paris’s Jeu de Paume and SFMOMA, and earned her a nomination for the 2019 Deutsche Börse Photography Prize; 2017 nominee Cristina de Middel had a solo show at Magnum’s Paris gallery; and Bieke Depoorter, Carolyn Drake and Susan Meiselas featured in a group exhibition focused on collaborative photography at the Magnum Print Room in London.

50 years since the Prague Spring, Josef Koudelka – who famously photographed the event – returned to Prague with a retrospective exhibition on the occasion of his 80^th birthday. Several magnum photographers, including Jim Goldberg, Bruce Davidson, and Alec Soth featured in the Barbican’s Another Kind of Life exhibition, which focused on the documenting of those living on the margins of society. The year drew to a close with an expansive retrospective of Paolo Pellegrin’s work, Un’antologia, at the MAXXI Museum in his native Rome.

Magnum China was published this year, exploring the depth of work produced by Magnum photographers in the country over the last 80 years. The books spans the nation’s civil and World War experiences, cultural revolutions, and China’s ascent to global super power status. 2018 also saw Magnum take on representation of South African photographer Ernest Cole’s formerly lost archive, which will be digitized over the coming year. We also sadly said goodbye to Abbas, Erich Lessing and Ara Güler, who passed away this year.
