Magnum photographers journey through contested lands, Martin Parr makes a podcast appearance, and more from the agency this week
Magnum Photographers for Pacific Standard
Six Magnum photographers went to remote regions round the world where indigenous communities are waging battles against governments & commercial interests to remain on their ancestral lands. For Pacific Standard’s project ‘A Journey Through Contested Lands’, which was produced with support from the Pulitzer Center, Emin Özmen went to Azerbaijan to photograph the Talysh People, fighting to preserve their language and culture; Jonas Bendiksen photographed hunting communities in Greenland; Susan Meiselas met the Garifuna people fighting for a place to live in Honduras; Stuart Franklin explored how the livelihoods of indigenous people in Malaysia have been affected by private sector interests and infrastructure; Thomas Dworzak visited the Maasai in northern Tanzania, who are seeing their ancestral lands claimed by miners and the government; and Chien-Chi Chang met the T’boli-Dulangan Manobo, who were living a quiet life in The Philippines until the armed forces arrived.
