Bruno Barbey captured an emotional crowd at Barack Obama's 2009 presidential inauguration
On January 20, 2009, the first inauguration of the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama, set an attendance record for any event held in Washington, DC. Although no official count was taken, the government agencies and federal officials who coordinated security and traffic management determined the attendance count to be 1.8 million people, based on information collected by cameras and individuals on the ground.
Galvanized by Obama’s optimistic promise of change and charged with the significance of the first black president of the United States entering official office, the crowds were celebratory and emotional. Bruno Barbey immersed himself amongst the attendees, capturing feeling on the ground.
