Magnum Contact Sheet Prints tell as much of a story as the single image that goes on to become iconic: they reveal the befores, the afters, and the almost theres, that surround some of the most iconic photographs.
A selection of historic Contact Sheets by Magnum photographers are available as high quality, unsigned, contemporary 16×20″ prints. These contact prints offer the opportunity to own a piece of Magnum’s history.
This contact sheet features Members of the Yakuza, Japan’s mafia, in Asakusa, Tokyo, Japan, 1998. The Yakuza’s 23 gangs are Japan’s top corporate earners. The gangs modeled themselves on American gangsters from the 1950s. Visibly comfortable with him, Bruce Gilden is able to capture rare portraits of the gang members, seen flashing their traditional gang tattoos. Yakuzu is said to be the largest organized crime phenomenon in the world.
From his collection Go, Gilden presents another side to the traditional, often stereotypical, view of Japanese society, digging deeper to find people who in one way or another, stood out from the others.
Gilden joined Magnum Photos in June 1998.
