The Magnum Digest: September 20, 2019
Christopher Anderson's TIME cover, Gregory Halpern in BJP, Bruce Gilden shoots Gucci, and more from Magnum photographers this week
Christopher Anderson’s TIME cover
Christopher Anderson‘s portrait of French president Emanuel Macron is on the cover of the new issue of TIME Magazine. The feature sees the leader, now at the halfway point of his first term, discussing his presidency in the context of a year of protest and violence in France. You can read the full transcript of the interview between Macron and Vivienne Walt here, on TIME.
Masculinity in the American Midwest
Gregory Halpern’s new monograph, Omaha Sketchbook, published by MACK Books, has been featured on the British Journal of Photography. The book explores the perceptions, realities and manifestations of masculinity in contemporary America, and – as Halpern puts it – ‘the link between complete inadequacy and violence’. You can read the article on BJP here.
Halpern also spoke about the project for a feature on Magnum. You can read that piece here.
Halpern will be giving a talk on the work, and signing copies of the book, on Tuesday 24 September, at 7.30pm in the Strand Book Store, New York City. More information, here.
Remembering Robert Frank
Following the death of photographer Robert Frank, on September 9, a number of Magnum photographers have remembered the man, and the imapact of his work. Eli Reed, Alec Soth and Jim Goldberg contributed their thoughts to this New York Times article, while Goldberg, Martin Parr and Thomas Hoepker all added their recolections and insights to a feature on the BJP.
Bruce Gilden shoots Gucci
Bruce Gilden recently photographed a selection of models wearing Gucci make-up and jewellery for CR Fashion Book. Six of these up-close portraits feature in the latest issue of the magazine – on sale now. You can also see a selection of Gilden’s portraits online here.
California Trip on L’oeil de la photographie
The French photography site has covered the recent re-release of Dennis Stock’s classic photobook, California Trip, by Anthology Editions. The work was the product of Stock’s travels through the Golden State at the apex of its radical, countercultural heyday. You can read the article in French here, or see more of the work, and read Stock’s own words on it here, on the Magnum site.
A number of Stock’s photographs from California Trip are available as fine prints, on the Magnum Shop, here.
